USFS TESTING

The USFS uses testing to qualify skaters for the various competitive levels seen at competitions. The test structure encompasses tests for moves in the field, freestyle, dance and pairs. Coaches prepare skaters for each test and determines when the skater is ready to take the test. Troy SC test sessions will be posted on the website. We try to have 4 test sessions a year—2 in the winter/spring, one before the Troy competition in mid-July and one in August, right before the rink closes for maintenance.

To compete at Regionals, a skater will skate in the group that corresponds to their highest freestyle test passed as of September 1 of that year. For all other competitions, skaters usually can enter the group that corresponds to their highest freestyle, dance or pairs test passed or one level higher. Check the competition announcements for each competition because this requirement may vary from competition to competition.

Applications to test may be found on our website. Coaches must sign and verify the correct test(s) level. Return the test form with payment. Test applications are accepted up to one week before the test date. Late applications are accepted on a space available basis and a late fee of $50 applies.

Schedules will be  made available 2-3 days in advance of the test date.

Plan to be at the rink 30 minutes before scheduled warm-up time—skaters ahead of you could cancel at the last minute, the ice might not need a scheduled resurface, etc. One to three judges are on a panel. Skaters typically share a warm-up with a few other testers. Most tests are individual, with the exception of Pre-Pre moves and Pre-Pre freestyle tests which could have 2-3 skaters testing at the same time.

The judges will direct skaters through the moves or elements. If the judges would like to see a move or element reskated after testing is completed, the judge in charge will request it. Skaters can utilize a coach, practice the element, then notify the judges to reskate the element.

Written comments from the judges are provided to each skater. These are available during a break or at the end of the test session.

Skaters are permitted to retake tests 28 days or more after the date last tested at that specific level.

 GOOD LUCK!
